Q3 2021 Review

Q3 2021 Review

The third quarter, as Dean Wesley Smith calls it, is the Time of Great Regret. And for me, Q3 2021 was definitely that. As he explains it, you get to the end of Q2 and start freaking out because you haven’t got anything done. But for me, it was the time I thought my writing career was coming to an end.

Q3 2021 Review

1. Husband

  • Cooking his favourite meals.
  • Sharing his concerns.
  • Doing the chores that annoy him the most when they don’t get done.

As it turns out, walking the dog is a good time to chat, and find renovation inspiration. Not necessarily doing so well on the others…

2. Health

  • Walk every morning before breakfast.
  • Prepare healthy lunches at breakfast.
  • Slowly give up meat and sugar.

We’ve transitioned to walking twice a day on weekdays, and one LOOONG walk each day of the weekend.

And we’ve tried a delivery service. It’s been interesting because they give you just enough to feed two; smaller produce and lots of tiny packages of spice mixes. We are getting a better idea of serving sizes. I am annoyed to say DB is losing more weight than me. Still, he’s got more to lose…

Haven’t actually given up meat or sugar, but definitely taking less.

3. Writing

  • Write every day.
  • Write first thing in the morning.
  • Finish one thing, then write the next.

More recently (with the voice back) I’ve been writing every day, first thing in the morning. It’s working well, though overall my wordcount was down.

I have accidentally moved to a place where I rest for a day or two after I finish a story, and I think having a break between them is working out well. It takes a little time to let one story go, and make space for the next one to come in. And the longer the story, the longer the break required. I probably won’t bother with counting a streak until I start writing something longer.

And while I’m at it, I’m decreasing my word target to 1.2% of this quarter’s: 47,593 for the next quarter, and then we’ll see.

Upshot

I find it so interesting that a couple of weeks in September made the whole quarter seem really quite grim. And as it turns out, it really hasn’t been that bad.

I was planning to rev up for Q3, but it seems I may have been stressing myself out to much. So for Q4, I hope I can chill out and relax a bit. Just cruise, so to speak, and enjoy the process a bit more.
